Head of Management Accounts

Pinnacle Group are looking for a Head of Management Accounts. This is a senior finance leadership role responsible for the quality, accuracy and timeliness of management accounting and financial reporting across the Group. Leading a team of 6-8 finance professionals, including a mix of Finance Business Partners and Management Accountants, you will ensure a robust, well-controlled month-end close process and the production of high-calibre monthly reporting that gives the Senior Leadership Team the financial insight it needs to drive business decision-making.

This is a hands-on leadership role, combining technical accounting rigour, strong people management, and the ability to business partner effectively with senior operational and financial stakeholders across a large, multi-divisional organisation.

Our Finance Team is part of our Central Services, providing expert support to all areas of the business. They help ensure our operations run efficiently, embrace best practice and stay financially strong – enabling our teams to deliver on our mission to Transform Communities and Change Lives.

The ideal candidate will be a qualified accountant with proven experience leading, managing and developing a finance team, ideally within a complex, multi-site or multi-entity environment. Strong technical accounting knowledge and experience of management accounts preparation, month-end close and balance sheet control in a high-volume, multi-entity environment. Experience within housing, facilities management, outsourcing, contract services or a similar sector, together with knowledge of contract commercial models, mobilisations and margin management, would be advantageous.

This is a 18-month fixed-term hybrid contract requiring attendance at our Holborn office two-three days per week, with the remaining days working remotely. The role is paying £80,000-£85,000 depending on experience with a performance related bonus of up to 10%

Key responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership and Development: Line manage, coach and develop a team of 6-8 (Senior Finance Business Partners and Management Accountants), setting clear objectives, providing regular feedback, and supporting career progression. Mentor the senior staff within the Management Account team in order to assist development and aid succession planning through all levels of the Management Accounts function. Build a high-performing, collaborative team culture, manage resourcing and workload across the team, and champion best practice in management accounting and business partnering.
  • Monthly Management Accounts and Reporting: Own the Group month-end close timetable and process, ensuring all financial close activities (accruals, prepayments, deferred and accrued income, revenue recognition, balance sheet reconciliations and journals) are completed accurately and on time across all divisions and subsidiaries. Ensure the production of high-calibre, timely and well-controlled monthly management accounts and reporting packs.
  • Senior Leadership Reporting: Prepare and present consolidated monthly reporting packs, key performance indicators and variance analysis to the Senior Leadership Team and divisional Boards, providing clear, accurate and timely financial information to support and drive business decision-making.
  • Financial Control and Balance Sheet Integrity: Maintain a strong control environment across the Group, with oversight of balance sheet reconciliations, reserving, and compliance with accounting standards and Group finance policies. Identify and resolve control weaknesses and financial risks proactively.
  • Business Partnering: Work closely with Divisional Operations Directors, Senior Finance Business Partners and profit centre managers, developing a deep understanding of contracts and divisional P&Ls to plan, analyse and drive operational and financial performance.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Lead the management accounts contribution to the annual budget process and periodic forecasts, providing robust variance analysis and commentary against budget and prior year, and monitoring ongoing progress against divisional and corporate targets.
  • Process Improvement and Systems: Drive continuous improvement in financial processes, systems and reporting tools across the Group, identifying opportunities to increase efficiency, automation and the quality of management information.
  • Audit and Compliance: Support the annual statutory audit process, including audit fieldwork and the resolution of audit queries, ensuring the Group maintains a robust and well-evidenced control environment.
  • Cash Flow Reporting: Oversee Group cash flow reporting and monitoring, ensuring accurate and timely visibility of cash position to key stakeholders.
  • Ad Hoc Analysis and Trouble-shooting: Perform and oversee reactive, investigative analysis on key financial and operational issues as required, on both a divisional and Group-wide basis.

Key Requirements

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA), with a minimum of 5 years' post-qualification experience at a senior finance level.
  • Proven experience leading, managing and developing a finance team, ideally within a complex, multi-site or multi-entity environment.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and experience of management accounts preparation, month-end close and balance sheet control in a high-volume, multi-entity environment.
  • A track record of producing high-calibre, timely and accurate monthly reporting to senior leadership and/or Board level.
  • Excellent business partnering skills, with the ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and influence non-finance senior stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret P&L, balance sheet and cash flow data to identify opportunities and mitigate risk.
  • Experience of budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis within a large, multi-divisional organisation.
  • Advanced IT skills, including strong Excel capability, and experience working with Finance and budgeting systems.
